The highly leaked but much anticipated iPhone 3G is official, revealed yesterday during Apple‘s WWDC 2008.

iPhone 3G will be available in 2 flavors, 8GB at US$199 (RM700) and 16GB at US$299 (RM1000), in the US via AT&T in a 2 year contract, beginning July 11. 2008.

In a strange move, the new iPhone 3G will not be available from Apple‘s online store nor can you activate it yourself from home. You will now have to walk into an AT&T store to buy and activate it in-store while you are there. AT&T have said that activation can be done in a few minutes, but its still a departure on how Apple traditionally sells its stuff.

Packed with new features are: 3G (duh), Firmware 2.0, GPS (A-GPS that uses cellular signals to complement satellite signals), Wi-Fi (still at 802.11a/g, no N support), new dock (to fit the new shape), 300 hours standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio, 3.5mm flushed headphone jack, and the back is completely in black plastic. Better still, it is also available in full WHITE, way cool!

Another 48 countries have been identified to receive the iPhone 3G “later this year”: Argentina, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, C. African Republic, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Estonia, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Greece, Honduras, Hungary, India, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Macau, Madagascar, Mali, Malta, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Niger, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Singapore, Qatar, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey, Uruguay.

You will notice that Malaysia is not listed, damn! Look like I’ll have to wait for the unlocked version then.

Blu-Ray wins the High Def video format, blu-ray in Xbox360 soon? March 11, 2008

The 1080P High Definition Video format war is over. When HD-DVD exclusive Warner Bros studios switched to support the Blu-Ray format exclusively, the winner was effectively decided. Shortly thereafter, Toshiba (the main player in the HD-DVD format) too announced that they will cease to produce new HD-DVD players and withdrawing from the format war.

Now, its reported that Sony is talking to Microsoft about adopting the Blu-Ray format to its systems. While Sony have approached Apple for the same talks too (Microsoft and Apple are supporters of HD-DVD format), there are now strong rumors that Xbox360 may feature Blu-Ray as standard drive format.

While these are rumors at this point of time, it is not impossible for Xbox360 to adopt the Blu-Ray as the format due to the larger storage capabilities and as games becomes bigger (Lost Oddessey will fit in one dual layer Blu-Ray disc instead of four dual layer DVD dics). Alternatively, Microsoft could come up with a Blu-Ray add-on drive, as they have done with the HD-DVD add-on drive.

This will be interesting to keep watch, to see how Microsoft will react.

iPhone available in MY, but don’t work with Maxis. October 30, 2007

Local handphone shops have the unlocked iPhones! Prices range from RM2000++ for the 4GB version and RM3000++ for the 8GB version.

While the stop sales reps are unsure of the iPhone firmware version, I am pretty sure its the V1.02 Sim unlocked with the tools available from the internet. Be warned that if you upgrade the firmware to V1.1.1, you are guaranteed to brick your new toy.

Contrary to earlier reports, these sim unlocked iPhone will not work well with Maxis where you can only make outgoing calls and not receive incoming calls (defeats the purpose of having a handphone, doesn’t it??). Its report that this is apparently a Maxis internal problem and its not native to the iPhone itself. This was confirmed by several readers as well.

These sim unlocked iPhone works well with Celcom and DiGi, so if you are a subscriber and have deep pockets, get your paws on one today from the local shops.

iPhone Dev Team have released into the wild AnySim 1.1, their free unlocking application that unlocks iPhones with firmwares V1.02 and V1.1.1 and lets you use the iPhone with any GSM network.

AnySim 1.1 will only unlock “virgin” iPhones only, so it wont unlock your currently locked V1.1.1 iPhones, but iPhone Dev Team have also mentioned of a future apps that will unbrick locked V1.1.1 iPhones, but no dates were mentioned.

And if you update your unlocked V1.02 (using AnySim 1.1) to V1.1.1, you will still brick the iPhone, so be warned and be very informed on what you are doing.

iPhone can be downgraded to V1.0.2 for third party apps, phone features still locked by V1.1.1. September 30, 2007

Apple have recently released a firmware V1.1.1 update for its iPhone. With this update, Apple have relocked all iPhone that was SIM unlocked as well as other application softwares by third party software. In fact, all iPhone relocked by V1.1.1 will require iPhone owners to return to Apple or AT&T to release the iPhone, for a small fee chargable.

But for now, there is a method to downgrade your iPhone third party software application back to the friendlier V1.0.2. Please note that this method will not downgrade the baseband phone of your locked V1.1.1 iPhone, meaning while you can use the software, WiFi and other third party stuff, your iPhone’s phone function will still require unlock by Apple or AT&T. Click here to learn how.

If you have SIM unlocked your V1.0.2 iPhone, please dont upgrade to V1.1.1 if you want continious use of your AT&T free iPhone.

Apple to give US$100 back to early iPhone adopters? September 7, 2007

After Apple announced the price drop of the 8GB iPhone, there was some unhappy responses from the iPhone early adopters, those who paid the full US$599 for it. In a response to the outcry, Steve Jobs have issued an open letter to his staff, stating that he will give all iPhone owners an US$100 Apple gift certificate. The actual details of the gift certificate, as well as the eligibility to claim the credit, will be revealed next week.

While this is very obviously designed to calm those early Apple supporter, the consumer electronics industry have never offers any form of rebate or credit to any early adopters of a product, especially when the product eventually drops in price.

Well done Apple, you may have maneuvered yourself out of a sticky situation.

US$200 price cut for 8GB iPhone. September 6, 2007

In a move that will irk more early adopters of iPhone, Apple have announced a US$200 price cut off the 8GB iPhone. US buyers will now be able to get the 8GB iPhone at only US$399, despite iPhone have only been available in the market for only two months.

Also, Apple is also killing the 4GD iPhone models, and is clearing their stocks by selling them at US$299. Guess this is the best time to get the iPhone, for US users at least.

So for now, should we wait three months before getting the iPod touch, in anticipation of price cuts by Apple?? Guess this may backfire on Apple, as they may shy away potential early adopters of the flashy iPod Touch.

We are lucky as the iPhone have not made it to the Asian shores yet, so we won’t have to endure such heart pains from such drastic price cuts from Apple.
